Pair of Large Gaucho Spurs decorated with Dragons. A matched pair of spurs made of a silver coloured metal, probably Alpacca or a similar nickel alloy. Both sides of both spurs are decorated with dragons. They have large circular heelplates with cast decoration. The spur necks are cast in the shape of dragons or sea monsters. They have large steel sawtooth rowels, the steel shows a little surface oxidation and one of the teeth is broken. There is a white metal disc on each side of each rowel. There are no maker’s marks or stamps. Both spurs have metal fatigue cracks on the inside of the heel bands (please see images). One has been soldered but both weaken the spurs, making them more suitable for display than actual use. Please ask for more images if you need them. Dimensions : 9″ (23cm) long x 2½” (6.5cm)wide, Rowel 2¾ (7cm) Weight – approx 1lb 11¾oz (785g). Track Page Views With. Auctiva’s FREE Counter. Pair Outstanding CALDWELL American Eagle Sconces, Mirror Image Casting, Restored
Pair of Outstanding E. CALDWELL American Eagle Double Candle Wall Sconces, Castings Face One Another, Restored. Caldwell wall sconces were manufactured during the early 1900’s. Caldwell was in business from 1895 to the early 1950’s, but the type of original wiring and the type of mounting brackets indicate early 1900’s to us. The sconces are bronze (possibly a very hard brass) and they have great detail in the wings and feathers. We believe them to be bronze because of the sharp detail in the castings and because there is almost no tarnishing, and brass would have darkened a lot over their 100 years life span. Also, the top and bottom of each bobeche and the ball that each eagle perches on are patinated (not painted) which is more typically used with bronze. The castings derive from the Great Seal of the United States, each depicting an American Eagle, one facing the other, and each carrying arrows and olive branches in their claws and having a garland of laurel leaves and berries draped around their necks (symbolizing victory). The sconces use 3 porcelain candles that take a candelabra bulb (not included) and they are in excellent condition. They also have a hurricane shade surrounding the porcelain candles. The aluminum base was loose on one of these shades and we noticed that the base of the shade was marked “CZECHOSLOVAKIA” (see photo 11). We have subsequently reattached the base, but they are attached with plaster of Paris and you can soak one off if you want to verify. We rewired the sconces (it was a chore to pull out that original wax coated wire) and made up some mounting hardware (missing when we got the sconces). The mounting hardware consists of a standard crossbar to to attach to the wall box and French hook to hold each sconce. FYI, while we have seen many of these sconces for sale online, these are the best that we have seen. We have restored other pairs of these, but these are the best we have ever had. Also, we have two other pairs of these eagle sconces which we have not yet restored, but this is the best, most complete pair. Dimensions with hurricane shades in place: 12″ high, 11″ wide, project 4 from the wall. Just notify us within 30 days of receiving them. We have lots of other sconces and antique lighting for sale, so please check out our lighting store.
