This cool pair of ladies stockings is really old – they are “Edwardian” – a fashion style that was made popular just after the Victorians, by the English Court of King Edward. They date from 1900 to 1910. They are made from cotton, and don’t appear to have ever been worn. They are an off-white, and meant to be worn for casual wear, in the daytime. They were meant to be held in place by garters, which were just tied into place, as elastic had not yet been invented. They are meant to come to just above the knee. Dresses at the time were worn just above the ankle. They measure 26 from the top of the back to the bottom of the heel. The foot measures 10 1/2 from the heel to the toe. They are a “Large” size, meant to fit a ladies size 8 to 9. Ladies worn stockings like this year around! I can’t imagine how hot and uncomfortable they must have been, especially when combined with bloomers, petticoats, a whalebone corset, then a dress, and of course full gloves and a hat. No wonder the ladies fainted. I have another pair, a bit heavier, a cotton wool blend, and a bit smaller. I try and recycle packaging materials as much as I can.
