Pair of Large Nayarit Ancestral Figures in the Ixatlan del Rio Style, 100BC-200AD
This pair of large Nayarit ancestral figures is offered from the estate of a prominent Texas collector. The two are in the Ixatlan del Rio style of the ancient Nayarit culture dating them to between 100 B. The male stands at 25 inches (63.5 cm) and weighs 11 lbs 7.5 oz. The female at 24 inches (60.96 cm) and 1l lbs 8.5 oz. In the Nayarit tradition they are both constructed with hollow bodies, cranial vent openings and legs spread atop large feet allowing them to stand without assistance. Both figures have red-slipped surfaces with ochre, black, and white accents. They have many decorative ornaments and each wears a turban made of ochre cord wrapping. The male is holding a dagger in his right hand and the female is holding a bowl, characteristics symbolizing their roles. Repair work has been done on both figures by professional conservators who allowed the imperfections to remain visible. The repair work includes rebuilding broken neck parts on both figures as well as cracks in the males’s right arm and body. The female figure’s right ear is missing.
